Driven by butterfly data of almost 90 different species, such as main wing color, main species, and wing span, these generative butterflies were let free to evolve and "fly" a whimsical path across the canvas. Each reload of the code would create a completely different looking collection of paths, colors, and overall feel. After an extensive curation I've picked this result, and three other versions, to include in the "Marble Butterfly" series.

This piece is slightly different from the other three in the series. I've layered several versions, all taken at different times when the butterflies were moving across the screen. This layering makes the colors even more vibrant and pop of the canvas.

This is a limited edition with 50 (and one artist proof) of the A4 and 50 of the A3 size.

Printed with archival ink on high-quality Hahnemühle Pearl fine art paper (285 gsm) by theprintspace. This paper has a nice subtle, but smooth texture, on a natural white paper tone with a satin finish for a slight gloss which brings out the vibrant colors.

I originally created this visualization for the "Nature" month of Data Sketches. You can find an interactive version of it here, and if you're interested to read about its creation process, from idea, to data, sketching, and programming, you can read about it in the book Data Sketches that I co-wrote.

Small note | Some of the photos of the actual piece can come from the other Marble Butterfly versions.
