The Patchwork Kingdom collection is a data & generative art charity collection that I created/programmed for the Giga Connect project of UNICEF, which aims to connect all of the schools in the world to the internet. The Giga project has a dataset of ±280,000 schools from developing countries around the world for which they know if there is an internet connection or not. I took this data and divided the schools into 1000 subsets and turned each school into a tiny square. All the squares together build up into two separate kingdoms. Those in the upright kingdoms are schools already connected to the internet, while those in the hidden / upside down kingdoms are not. Each artwork is thereby showing the “digital divide” that still exists in our world.

You can read all about the design process and how exactly the data from the schools is woven throughout the design in my blog. For example, the schools with the fastest internet connection are displayed as different types of flowers.

Patchwork Kingdom #672 in particular is a kingdom that is called Drumgaros. It displays 226 schools from 14 different countries, has 41 unique symbols to discover and is colored in the "Narwal" color palette.

I signed both the artwork (on the front, lower-right corner) and the frame on the back, including the artwork's name and Patchwork Kingdoms number.

This is one of the only four signed prints that I chose to frame from the Patchwork Kingdom collection (consisting of 1000 digital pieces). I will never print and sign (and frame) any other Patchwork Kingdom piece. Therefore the four from this physical collection are quite unique and special.

I designed the Patchwork Kingdom collection with the idea of a "childlike wonder", taking inspiration from Mary Blair's "It's a Small World", and all pieces from this collection would fit perfectly in any home, especially a child's bedroom.

NFT

If interested, you can also receive the NFT version of this Patchwork Kingdom with the purchase of this framed print (otherwise I will keep it stored away for you in case you ever want it).

Material

Printed with vibrant archival ink on high-quality Hahnemühle Photorag fine art paper (308 gsm) and framed by theprintspace. This paper has a nice subtle texture and an off-white paper tone. The art is surrounded by a 3cm wide bright white mount.

The piece is framed professionally with special museum grade anti-reflective art glass that removes virtually any glare (when you stand in front of it you can't even tell that there's glass at all). The frame is a nice sturdy wood with a white finish to really put the focus on the artwork inside.

Shipping

Because these are unique and big pieces the shipping costs are €20 for Europe and €50 for the rest of the world.
